Abstract

The purpose of this study is to survey the experience and consciousness of the patients who have visited the oral prophylaxis practice lab, and to investigate significant differences among those findings, based on sex, marital status, age and occupation.
Sampling was made for the patients who have visited the oral prophylaxis practice lab. The survey questionnaire of scaling experience and consciousness consists of 4 questions of general characteristics, 3 questions of scaling experience, 3 questions of scaling suggestions and acceptances, 4 questions of lab atmosphere and feeling, 1 question of own attitude ¢¥about scaling, totaled 15 questions.
In this study general characteristics are marked as frequency and percentage. Chi-square was used, utilizing the statistical analysis package SPSS 9.0 for Window. The significant level is a 0.05.
The findings of this study are as follows; the patients who have visited oral prophylaxis practice lab made up their minds for scaling by other people¢¥s recommendations. Thus to prevent oral disease, students should recommend people that they have scaling, even though they are not patients.
The decisions that they would have scaling was made within one week before they visited the oral prophylaxis practice lab. To make a practice smooth, it will be reasonable that an appointment be made a week before the practice.
Half of the people who will get treatment feel nervous when they are suggested to have scaling ar at the moment before the scaling. Especially single women are more nervous than other people. Thus it is necessary to make single women comfortable when someone suggests them to have scaling right before scaling is done.
To analyze the psychological status of people while they have scaling, one third of them still feel uncomfortable. Thus in the scaling treatment
practice, students need to put more efforts to make patients comfortable.
To summarize the feelings after the scaling, most of the people (88%) say that they feel fresh. Thus students need to introduce the cases which have fresh feeling right before or after the scaling.
Two third responded that they will regularly have scaling, and one third responded negatively about the scaling. Thus it is necessary to inform the necessity of the scaling.
